The Art of Cutting Your Losses

The Art of Cutting Your Losses

There are times in life when we need to cut our losses, let go and move on.

In the tarot there is a card known as the four of cups. This card often symbolizes a man sitting with one full cup, and three empty cups next to him. Wallowing in self pity and disillusionment, stuck in stagnation, this person does not see the options before them. Instead they are fixated on those empty cups, once full- once fulfilling but now empty, having served their purpose.

How many of us can relate to this situation?

There are times in life when we need to cut our losses, let go and move on. Life is pregnant with change. What do I mean by this?

Change is the only constant.

As cyclical beings we move through cyclical phases. The expectation and desire for safety and stability moves us to avoid change as much as we can, but the reality is that the more comfortable we can
become with change, and the more we consciously choose to ride the tides of change- the happier we will be.

Stagnation keeps us stuck in the past. It prevents us from moving forward because we are holding on so tightly to an illusion, or to a dream of the past, or simply put- to those empty cups, no longer full, sitting there empty.  Whether it's "this shouldn't have happened" "this person should have treated me better" "it wasn't supposed to go this way" "why does it have to be so hard" etc etc. in order to overcome this you must fearlessly and mercilessly strike from your mind and way of being, any sense of self pity. Lift yourself up, grab that full cup and move towards building a new life. In order to do this we have to risk letting go of those cups that are no longer full, those lost opportunities, and most importantly, the undesirable habits of wallowing in self pity, holding on to disillusionment and wishing for things to be different rather than taking action to make it so.

Those three cups are empty because they no longer fulfill or satisfy you. Also a card of boredom, this boredom is letting you know that it's time to make a change. You can wish all you want for those lost opportunities to magically be blooming and those cups to be full once again, but the truth is- that even if they were, they would not make you happy. Those specific opportunities are not for you- that's why those cups are empty. Trust yourself and follow the signs. Boredom and stagnation do not come without cause or reason. We choose to move out of it, by grabbing the opportunity that is before us, and taking that first step towards making something happen- with who we are, what we have, and what we can do- right now in this moment.
